Mitten Minute: College Basketball is Alive!

College basketball: Michigan 77, Michigan Tech 55. Michigan opens the season with an easy win over Tech in the opening round of the lengthily named 2008 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer. Manny Harris scored a career-high 30 points, DeShawn Sims notched his second-ever double-double with ten points and 12 boards, and this one was over fast — the Wolverines were up 18 at the half. Box.
Side note to slyly include more Michigan teams: Tech is a Division II team that plays in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference along with Saginaw Valley State, Michigan’s exhibition opponent last week, as well as both of Michigan State’s preseason opponents, Lake Superior State and Northern Michigan. Last year, Tech finished second in the seven-team North Division even though its conference record was only 8-10. The math works because the South Division was strong and also because of powerhouse Grand Valley State, which won the North with an 18-0 record.
NHL: Pittsburgh 7, Detroit 6 (OT). The Wings blew a 5-2 third period lead and Marian Hossa lost against his old team despite recording two assists. On the bright side, he didn’t get hurt. Box.
NBA: Detroit 100, Sacramento 92: The Pistons get their first win of the Allen Iverson era, as Iverson goes for 30 with nine assists. The pleasant surprise of the night was Pistons reserve point guard Will Bynum, who spent the second quarter beating various Kings off the dribble. Bynum, the former Georgia Tech star, signed a two-year deal with Detroit prior to this season after spending the last two seasons playing in Tel Aviv. Box.
