High Five for Monday, 12/8/08: Tigers deal for Laird

posted by Steve on Dec. 08, 2008; filed in: MSU football | Tigers

Nice of the Tigers and Spartans to generate some news to punctuate The High Five’s first Monday:

  • Baseball’s front office types were still settling into their hotel rooms Sunday night before the Winter Meetings when the Tigers made a deal: Texas catcher Gerald Laird to Detroit for minor league pitcher Guillermo Moscoso and a mysterious second pitcher. That’s according to Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal.
  • The Spartans are playing in a New Year’s Day Bowl! Their matchup with preseason #1 Georgia in the Capitol One Bowl is MSU’s first January game since 2000. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution makes it sound as though Georgia isn’t quite as thrilled to be there as the Spartans are.
  • The Capitol One Bowl is in Orlando, Florida, which is sunnier and warmer than Michigan in January. Click here to reserve your tickets and see if MSU Sports Travel has removed its awkward reference to “exciting Spartan Outback Bowl action.” The Outback Bowl is a step down from the Capitol One Bowl and features Iowa and South Carolina.
  • Billfer is all over this Winter Meetings business, including the Tigers’ interest in SS Adam Everett. (Use that link or check the DTW homepage for the latest.)
  • Michael Curry is considering tweaking the Pistons’ starting lineup again, this time to a three-guard look.

Schedule for Monday, Dec. 8:

  • No games

As a die-hard Dawg fan I have to say I am disappointed with the season, but I believe UGA is in the bowl it should be in. And the Capitol One Bowl is nothing to sneeze at either. I would consider it the best non-BCS bowl, featuring a match-up between the clear #3 teams from the SEC and Big Ten. Georgia got embarrassed by Florida and Alabama, and Michigan State got embarrassed (I think), by Penn State and Ohio State. I haven’t watched much of MSU this year, but I think this should be a good match-up. I would be disappointed if we drew Iowa or Northwestern (or Utah - sorry Alabama), but I can be excited about this.
