High Five: Please, Lions, don’t draft a QB #1

Today’s High Five (or, “Please, Lions, don’t draft a QB with the top pick”):

  • Projecting good QBs is a crapshoot. Don’t take my word for it; don’t take any sportswriter’s word for it. Take it from Malcolm Gladwell, of “Tipping Point” fame, writing in this week’s New Yorker.
  • Next, look for Matthew Stafford and Sam Bradford on this Sports Illustrated list of top players coming to the draft. (Note, you’ll have to click to the article’s second page to find even one of them.)
  • Here’s a value-added link: both a note of caution and also a chance to download some Christmas music.
  • Here’s a sign that the Lions will be tempted by Georgia’s Matthew Stafford.
  • But if Pat Narduzzi’s defense can rattle Stafford in the Capitol One Bowl, maybe it will alarm the scouts and give Lions and Spartans fans a New Year’s Day two-for-one.

Today’s schedule:

  • NHL: San Jose at Detroit, 7:30pm

There will be a lot of tempting underclassman QBs to pick from, but if you wait for next year you might be able to get Mark Sanchez from USC, who is probably more NFL-ready than the rest of the crop, and who is rumored to be staying for his senior year.
