High Five: Chicago getting ready to host the Wings at Wrigley

Today’s High Five:

  • The Chicago Tribune has a series of stories today looking forward to the Blackhawks’ New Year’s Day matchup against the Red Wings outdoors at Wrigley Field. After the Bears hosted the Packers last night, we know the city’s fans are prepared to freeze.
  • Here’s confirmation that MSU freshman RB Glenn Winston was seriously involved in a serious Oct. 19 fight. He’s been buried on the depth chart since then, but in the story OL Roland Martin suggests that Winston could be a contributor in the Capital One Bowl. I’ll echo KJ’s observation that this seems, on the surface, to be a serious offense and not the type likely to get you reinstated to play in a bowl game. I’m reluctant to pass judgment based on no evidence or context except this news article, but if we see Winston on the field on New Year’s Day, I’ll be concerned that Mark Dantonio and Michigan State will have let football considerations trump moral ones. I won’t be sure of it, because, again, we know far too little about the situation, but I’ll be concerned.
  • There’s not much Tigers’ news these days, but Ian at Bless You Boys has pulled together much of what’s out there — including an analysis of potential closer Derrick Turnbow and notes on Mike Ilitch’s luxury tax payment for the season that wasn’t.
  • U-M Hoops runs down the Wolverines’ win over Florida Gulf Coast, including a look at Laval Lucas-Perry’s second game in Maize and Blue.
  • ESPN’s Pat Forde loves Tom Izzo.
  • Special bonus Capital One Bowl link (this is like an Antonio Alfonseca version of the High Five): here’s a Georgia writer reminscing about the last bowl game matchup between the Spartans and the Bulldogs.

Today’s schedule:

  • NHL: St. Louis at Detroit, 7:30pm
  • NBA: Chicago at Detroit, 8pm

The High Five will return on Friday the 26th. There are no games on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.

What’s this I hear about making Robertson the Closer?

Though Turnbo and Fuentes don’t make me feel much better about the situation.
