High Five: Linehan is next

Today’s High Five:

  • Another solid coaching pickup for the Lions, as Jim Schwartz tabbed former St. Louis Rams head coach Scott Linehan to be the new offensive coordinator in Detroit.
  • I’ve been waiting all day for the Tigers to finalize the Brandon Lyon signing, but to no avail. I’m also interested in the other reliever mentioned yesterday, Scott Williamson. I remember his glory days in Cincy, and think he’s a great pickup on a minor league contract. Ian at Bless You Boys agrees.
  • Jim Leyland says he’s got four starters: Jeremy Bonderman, Justin Verlander, Armando Gallaraga and Edwin Jackson. Dontrelle Willis, Nate Robertson and Zach Miner. So Jackson, the newcomer, isn’t just in the mix heading to Spring Training — he’s got a job.
  • Allen Iverson was named a starter in the NBA All-Star game.
  • NHL TV ratings are up; the Wings’ TV ratings are way down. Winging It In Motown analyzes the situation.

Lots of national TV for this weekend’s games:

Friday, January 23:

  • NBA: Dallas at Detroit, 7pm (ESPN)

Saturday, January 24:

  • College basketball: Northwestern at Michigan, 8pm (BTN)

Sunday, January 25:

  • College basketball: Michigan State at Ohio State, 3:45pm (CBS)
  • NBA: Houston at Detroit, 6:30pm (ESPN)
