High Five: Lions in rare company

Today’s High Five:
- The Lions fans who’ve tried to organize boycotts the last couple of years on the theory that the Lions don’t care about winning because they make money anyway . . . turns out the Lions don’t make money after all. Not only that, but they’re the only team in the league to have that distinction. According to Forbes, in 2007 every NFL team turned a profit except for Detroit.
- Sports Illustrated’s Michael Farber is mad at Nick Lidstrom and Pavel Datsyuk for sitting out the NHL All-Star Game. Lidstrom and Datsyuk are mad at the league for making them sit out tomorrow night’s game against Columbus.
- Lee at Tiger Tales looks at new Detroit reliever Brandon Lyon through the prism of a cool new stat that focuses on “clean outings” — outings when a reliever doesn’t allow a run to cross the plate. This seems like a great idea to me, since it more closely mirrors how late-inning relievers see their jobs than stats like ERA, WHIP or K/BB.
- The Pistons are in trouble, and Dave Dial has a great blog post detailing the issues and rumors surrounding Tayshaun Prince, Allen Iverson and others. For the record, I have trouble believing that Joe Dumars ever under any circumstances offered Tayshaun for Stephen Jackson. How much cap space do the Pistons really need? As it stands now, they’ll have room to make a run at multiple elite players.
- Scroll down to the bottom of this link for the news that former Browns GM Phil Savage is unlikely to join the Lions’ front office. Amidst all the splashy coordinator hires, I almost forgot about the personnel position.
